The History Of Orthodontics

December 2nd, 2016

Orthodontic treatment using Braces or Invisalign is simple compared to years ago! Did you know that Archeologists have found traces of early orthodontic treatment in humans dating back 50,000 years? These humans were Egyptian mummies that had crude bands around their teeth. The Archaeologists believe that catgut may have been tied to these bands to move teeth. Progress was slow in developing better treatments. In the 18th century there was a breakthrough when a man named Pierre Fauchad was born in 1728. He was later know as the Father of Dentistry. He invented an appliance he named the bandeau. Sounds almost pretty. It in fact was probably was not the most pleasant appliance ever created! It was shaped like a horseshoe and had holes in it to correct the teeth alignment. He also used a forcep called a pelican that he forcibly would move teeth and then tie them together in a better position while they healed. How much are you loving Dr. Chamberlian? Charles Goodyear invented a new type of rubber in 1839. Orthodontists realized potential in this rubber. In 1839 an American dentist used this rubber to make Orthodontic appliances.

In the 1970's Orthodontist's placed bands around teeth and soldered brackets to them. It was a metallic, miserable process.

Dr. Chamberlain went to Dental school and then completed an additional two years of Orthodontic speciality school. He has dedicated many years to "Unleashing inner smiles"! In 20016 we have tiny GAC self-ligating brackets to reduce friction, space age materials that bond directly to enamel and wires made of nickel titanium. Did you know that this metal alloy was developed by NASA? It has memory and is activated by body heat. This is why you no longer need to see an orthodontist every month. The movement is gradual, which makes treatment more comfortable and efficient. We hope you are enjoying your treatment progress at SuperSmile Orthodontics!

Do you feel it? That little twinge is your signal to gear up for school. If you're the usual parent you already have post it notes full of to do's hanging out around the house and if you're that freakisly organized parent, then Johnny's backpack is loaded up waiting at the door. Either way let us help you get from To-Do to Ta Da!

So along with hair cuts, school supplies (see school links bellow) and meet the teachers. We want to remind you to schedule your children for their orthodontic exam, adjustment, Invisalign adjustment or retainer check. Dr. Chamberlain would like to make sure that all your orthodontic needs are cared for before that summer to school adjustment period. EEK!

This is sooo important!  If your child has completed an exam but has yet to begin treatment. This is the perfect time to schedule and have braces placed or an Invisalign scan. This will give your child plenty of time to adjust to their new appliances and be comfortable. More importantly to match their new school clothes with the fun colors on their brackets. Seriously, priorities people!

Give us a call today at (702) 645-5100 or request an appointment online. See you real soon:)
